Fantasy Genre Happenings & Recent Interviews

Mist Falcon

Ryan Doughan was recently interviewed in Fantasy Authors Unplugged

Probably the biggest news of the last week involving the fantasy genre was that Christopher Lee passed away. If you haven’t read his bio it’s quite a list of accomplishments in a lifetime spanning 93 years.

The latest book by Terry Brooks, The Defenders of Shannara: The Darkling Child, came out on 6/9. I’ll read it soon and hand out my review but I do like the cover. Also, the Shannara TV series is set to premiere soon (listed as July on IMDB) and includes John Rhys-Davies in the cast. For those interested fans, Allanon is played by Manu Bennett.

As noted in last week’s review post, an unpublished story by J. R. R. Tolkien was bought by – and will presumably be published soon – by HarperCollins. It’s good to see that the scion of the fantasy genre is still having fiction published.

Fantasy Authors Unplugged: Carol Marrs Phipps

This is continuing feature on Archer’s Aim – Fantasy Authors Unplugged. I hope to frequently share an interview with a fantasy author. If you have authors to suggest and/or questions you’d like to see answered then leave a comment or send me an email. If you are a fantasy author and would like an interview please let me know and we’ll plan one that fits your schedule. Today I welcome Carol Marrs Phipps to share the newest book in the series she and her husband, Tom, wrote.

1. Please share briefly about your latest fantasy title.

DoomDoom, book six of The Heart of the Staff, is the concluding volume of our epic fantasy series.

Here is the cover blurb:

With the murder of her husband, King Artamus of Gwael, Queen Spitemorta at last rules the known world. She declares herself Omnipotent Empress and moves into her monstrous new castle in Niarg. And with her tools of power, the Great Staff and Crystal Heart, she believes she is invincible.

But then, General Coel, commander of all of her armies, brings tidings that four Elves have appeared in Niarg. These Elves should have been killed and eaten by her trolls, twenty years ago. And with these Elves returns the threat that the ancient Elven Prophecy predicting her downfall and death could still come to pass.

And somewhere far away, Ariel and Daniel, the very twins foretold in the Prophecy have become more powerful than any sorceress or wizard ever known. Together they could be invincible.

But can they destroy Spitemorta and her great tools of power? The time has come and one thing is certain. Either the twins and the rebellion will meet their doom, or Spitemorta and her minions will.

2. Do you prefer writing good and evil stories or more gray morality in your fantasy?

I’m not certain I have a preference. Most of our stories are actually a combination of the two, with a possible emphasis on the good vs evil theme.

3. How did you start writing fantasy?

When I was a little girl, I was captivated by magical tales. I wanted to be sprinkled with pixie dust so I could fly away with Peter Pan. I wanted to travel the yellow brick road in the witch’s slippers with Dorothy and the faint hearted lion. And I certainly wanted to be awakened by the kiss of a handsome prince. Small wonder that my passion today is writing Fantasy.

4. What usually catches your attention as the basis of a story?

Heart of the Staff SeriesTough question as I don’t believe there is any one thing that catches my attention as the basis of a story. It would have to be something that is relevant enough to pique the interest of our audience as well as something Tom and I both feel passionate about.

5. What research do you find must be done to write a story?

Fortunately for me, Tom, my co-author/husband has a photographic memory and is very widely read. It is rare when we need to research anything appreciable for our fantasy stories. On those occasions, however, Tom happily takes on the info gathering.

6. What keeps you going as a writer?

I love the adventure of creating and traversing new worlds. I find it exhilarating and possibly somewhat addictive.

7. Who are your favorite fantasy authors?

J.R.R. Tolkien, Robert Jordan, J.K. Rowling and C. S. Lewis are my favorite fantasy authors.
