The Week Ahead:

Scrivener will be featured twice this coming week as I shift from a Monday to a Friday schedule to accommodate all the book release events during the month of September. There will be an RRBC Spotlight Blog Tour on Wednesday as well as more authors featured in Fantasy Authors Unplugged.

The Bow of DestinyWriting News:

I’ve uploaded a preliminary manuscript version of The Bow of Destiny to Smashwords already. This weekend I expect to upload to Amazon and put that into pre-sale status so those who have been waiting to reserve a copy there should see it soon. Follow my Amazon page to receive updates on the book and shelve it on Goodreads to be reminded when it’s available. For those who missed it, here’s the link for the interview on Beyond the Cover. Also, the Brain to Books Blog Tour appearance is coming up on 8/31. I have another interview coming up in December so check the News page for more event announcements. See below for all the links to Trading Knives. The biggest news of all on the week is that the last beta-reader was extremely positive about The Bow of Destiny. There are a few tweaks to work on but I’m really enthused about the release and the events next month.

Please share your thoughts and ideas in the comments section. Sign up for my Archer’s Aim Digest mailing list to receive the forthcoming edition of my newsletter with announcements about upcoming releases and events (this months volume has already gone out). You’ll be the first to have news about my books, especially some free offers this summer related to the upcoming release of The Bow of Destiny, the first novel of The Bow of Hart Saga. Anyone who reserves a copy by 8/7 on Barnes & Noble, Kobo or iBooks (via the iTunes app) and emails me the screen-shot of the order will also receive a free coupon to download my e-book short story, The Black Bag containing a sample chapter of The Bow of Destiny. Additionally, August’s free e-book: Trading Knives is now available on Kobo, iBooks, Smashwords, Barnes & Noble & Amazon.

Shake the Shakes, Don’t Sweat the Sweats – Preparing for an Interview

You’ve agreed to do it. But now you’ve got the shakes. Maybe you feel like your going to faint. You’re going to do a LIVE interview. What were you thinking? What are you going to say?

Enter your email address to follow this blog and receive notifications of new posts by email.

BTR-BTC BadgeIf you’re like most of us, you’ve never been asked for an interview – certainly not one live. But if you are going to publish books then you should get used to being interviewed on the web, internet radio and regular radio.

Don’t let that initial flash of panic scare you. There are ways to prepare for an interview. It’s good for you to start thinking about what you will say. Michael Hyatt has shared some great tips on making just such preparation and it’s not so difficult.

I was recently asked to do my first interview on Rave Waves and found it quite a lot of fun to do. In fact, I wanted to share what my thoughts are on preparation and how I think I can do better in the future.

First, I listened to several of the Beyond the Cover archives and got a sense of what to expect from the host, Beem Weeks. While listening to these, try to imagine how you would answer the questions and why.

Usually hosts like to contact you ahead of time to give you more information. You also are expected to call in early so they can make sure everything is well with you. That’s the time to have some pre-interview discussion and get a feel of who your interviewer is. This is also a time to find common ground and get cozy. I would also advise that you find a comfortable, quiet location where you’re fairly sure you won’t be interrupted.

Now for what I did wrong and how it can be fixed. I thought that I did a mediocre job of introducing myself and the book. Likewise, I didn’t tell as much as I could about what I like to do.

How will I fix these? Simple, next live interview that I do I’m going to go over my author information and my book blurb and even keep some note cards handy for reference. It’s important not to ramble on but it’s equally important to take your time and say enough. Practice the details that you feel are important.

Archer’s Aim Digest mailing list

RaveWavesSo why is it that I didn’t do as well on these questions but did on others? After all, I know myself and my book, right? Simple, most of us aren’t used to talking about our lives and our books in this kind of format so we don’t say enough. So being thoughtful about the basics as well as other types of questions you are likely to get are equally important in preparation.

But there’s one more important thing to remember when doing an interview: be yourself. Seriously, your author-ness and your book will shine through just by giving yourself permission to be who you are. I found my time on Beyond the Cover incredibly helpful toward developing my public side as a writer. Being a member of Rave Reviews Book Club has been extremely helpful and being privileged to be a guest on one of the Rave Waves shows was important to me for honing a new skill as an author.

The Bow of Destiny News: The Interview & a Special Request

My first fantasy novel, The Bow of Destiny, has gone to pre-sale status while I put the finishing touches on the book. It’s available to reserve at these select retailers: Barnes & Noble, Kobo & iBooks (via the iTunes app) and soon on Amazon.

Enter your email address to follow this blog and receive notifications of new posts by email.

The Bow of DestinyThis Saturday, 8/8 at 12PM CST, I’ll be interviewed on Beyond the Cover by Beem Weeks. The show is part of the Rave Waves Network (a Rave Reviews Book Club production) on Blog Talk Radio. Just bookmark the links and the date.

I’ve also created a Thunderclap for the appearance so please consider participating by sharing your social media reach to announce the show on 8/8. I’ll need a total of 10o people to sign-up or the message won’t be broadcast so your help would be appreciated. During the interview, I expect to discuss the upcoming release of The Bow of Destiny, future books and what I currently have out.

Thunderclap is basically a way to send social media burst message where all the supporters accounts are used to broadcast a message. To find out more, take a look at Thunderclap’s FAQ. I’ll be using more of these in the future and they are a simple way that followers can help broadcast an announcement. I’ve participated in a number myself and been happy to help other authors out.

RW - Beyond The CoverAdditionally, as noted already, I’m working on the release of the book on 9/28. But as an indie author few people will know about this work unless the word gets out. So I’m looking for 20 special supporters to contact me and let me know that they are willing to help spread the word about the release. You’ll receive a free copy of the e-book as well as credit in the book. I’ve already had about five people commit to assisting and space is limited so send me an email or contact me over one of my social media accounts to let me know you’re in. If you’re interested but worried about time commitment, just know how much time you put in is up to you.

Thanks for reading today. I expect to share several posts from the ongoing Brain to Books Blog tour as well as a number of other interesting posts here this week. I look forward to the interview with plenty of listeners and at least a few questions from Twitter on Saturday!
