Title Of Book: The Remnant
Series: The Awakening Book 1
By: Paul B Spence
Sub-Genre: Sci-Fi, Space Opera
An archaeological expedition on the edge of human-settled space makes a startling discovery that could change the course of human history, but will anyone ever know?
Lt. Commander Hrothgar Tebrey was assigned to the archaeological expedition as a military attaché because of his knowledge of alien technology. The technology found in the ancient ruins isn’t exactly alien, however, and the ruins look a little too familiar.
Now, someone – or something – is manipulating events to sabotage the expedition: something that doesn’t want anyone to know about the discoveries, and will do anything to silence the scientists.
To save the expedition and the woman he loves, Tebrey must learn that while some things are worth dying for, but it’s the things worth living for that matter.
The Remnant ties together themes of love, loss, and sacrifice in a distant future that is both frightening and hopeful. Set in the latter half of the 30th century, this story, the first in a series, focuses on a fallen colony world on the edge of human-settled space. Bigger-picture elements, such as an interstellar war, play out in the background but still impact the characters in profound ways.
The main character, Hrothgar Tebrey, is a soldier who is deeply conflicted about the things that he has had to do in his career. He begins the story alone and without hope, but matures and grows over the course of the story to become the hero for the rest of the series. You see him here at the end of his career, but the beginning of his journey.

Meet Paul B. Spence:
I’m an archaeologist, GIS Coordinator, and writer, currently living in New Mexico.
I’m an avid fan of anything science fiction, books, tabletop RPGS, PlayStation games, LARPing, SCA, and lots of other things that take up too much time.
I get asked a lot about my inspirations, well, that could take a while. I’ve read thousands of books. My strongest inspirations would have to be the works of Roger Zelazny, Andre Norton, H.P. Lovecraft, and E.E. “Doc” Smith. I also love the stories of Robert A. Heinlein and Anne McCaffrey among many others.
Like most authors, I’ve had an eclectic career path. I’ve worked as a retail gofer, a food service monkey, brute laborer, a rennie, a writer for the RPG industry, and many other rewarding jobs that didn’t pay enough to feed me or my cats.
I am an active member of the Society for Creative Anachronism, where I really like to hit my friends with giant grass stems. No, I don’t feel that it is strange for a scientist to be doing such a thing. It is a good place to hang out with good people. I also really like to make things with my hands, and fight, yeah, I like to fight.
I have degrees in geology, cultural anthropology, and archaeology. I love science. If that offends you, you probably won’t like my books. Since, you know, I write science fiction. Stories about science. I won’t belabor the point any more.
I really love archaeology, and no, I haven’t found any tombs with ancient evils lurking.
I plan to keep it that way.
I will not dig on Mars, and I will NOT go to Z’ha’dum!

Hey there! I’m Matt, a sci-fi and fantasy author.
Two years ago, you helped me publish the first book of the Spectra saga. Now, I’m here to publish book two!
Val and Note saved the galaxy from the Sensus, but they’ve since been separated from their friends by order of the Hegemony. On the eve of Ascension Day—a celebration of 3,000 years since the Chosen races were uplifted by the Sentinels—enormous Architect constructs suddenly awaken on the Planes and cause mass devastation.
Guided by an enigmatic messenger, Val, and Note know that only a mysteriously hidden Architect ruin known as the Eternity Vault has the power to stop them. But they’ll have to deal with vengeful bounty hunters, the political turmoils of an empire, interstellar tycoons, mysterious dream riddles sung by a people known only as the Forgotten, and more to find it.
“The Eternity Vault”, Book 2 of the Spectra saga, is ultimately more of the sci-fi and fantasy universe that you came to love in the first book. More characters to meet, more planets and worlds to see, more monsters to fear, more lore to unravel, and above all else, more story to enjoy!
