The Remnant ties together themes of love, loss, and sacrifice in a distant future that is both frightening and hopeful. Set in the latter half of the 30th century, this story, the first in a series, focuses on a fallen colony world on the edge of human-settled space. Bigger-picture elements, such as an interstellar war, play out in the background but still impact the characters in profound ways.
The main character, Hrothgar Tebrey, is a soldier who is deeply conflicted about the things that he has had to do in his career. He begins the story alone and without hope, but matures and grows over the course of the story to become the hero for the rest of the series. You see him here at the end of his career, but the beginning of his journey.

Meet Paul B. Spence:
I’m an archaeologist, GIS Coordinator, and writer, currently living in New Mexico.
I’m an avid fan of anything science fiction, books, tabletop RPGS, PlayStation games, LARPing, SCA, and lots of other things that take up too much time.
I get asked a lot about my inspirations, well, that could take a while. I’ve read thousands of books. My strongest inspirations would have to be the works of Roger Zelazny, Andre Norton, H.P. Lovecraft, and E.E. “Doc” Smith. I also love the stories of Robert A. Heinlein and Anne McCaffrey among many others.
Like most authors, I’ve had an eclectic career path. I’ve worked as a retail gofer, a food service monkey, brute laborer, a rennie, a writer for the RPG industry, and many other rewarding jobs that didn’t pay enough to feed me or my cats.
I am an active member of the Society for Creative Anachronism, where I really like to hit my friends with giant grass stems. No, I don’t feel that it is strange for a scientist to be doing such a thing. It is a good place to hang out with good people. I also really like to make things with my hands, and fight, yeah, I like to fight.
I have degrees in geology, cultural anthropology, and archaeology. I love science. If that offends you, you probably won’t like my books. Since, you know, I write science fiction. Stories about science. I won’t belabor the point any more.
I really love archaeology, and no, I haven’t found any tombs with ancient evils lurking.
I plan to keep it that way.
I will not dig on Mars, and I will NOT go to Z’ha’dum!
