Sneak-Peek: The White Arrow Blurb

Photo used in The Bow of Destiny book trailer

Today, I’m giving a sneak-peek of tomorrow’s start to my Open-House event featuring digital autographs and lots of fun interaction here on Archer’s Aim. While you’re here, please take a few moments to share my Headtalker which will announce the event tomorrow morning across social media. It’s free and takes just a few clicks!

The White Arrow is progressing nicely at this point and it’s still my hope to release the book in late September (maybe the 20th).

There are always a number of details for book to be self-published and two of them are the cover and the book blurb. The cover is underway and about ready to be revealed. Check back tomorrow and you may get to see it during my weekend long digital autograph session.

However, the blurb is another matter and requires some thought. It’s always a trick with a book series to reveal what’s coming in the next book without ruining the books before it. Likewise, you have to be careful not to reveal too much about the upcoming book. I think it’s doubly true of the last book of a series – don’t reveal too much of the ending and risk ruining it for the readers. With that trepidation, here’s my rough draft of blurb for The White Arrow.

Haunted by his failure. Hunted for his inheritance. Seeking the fulfillment of prophecy.

Athson’s failures haunt him but he now has the object of his inheritance: the Bow of Hart. Though Magdronu and his servants are weakened, they still seek to thwart the Withling prophecy by taking the bow if they can find him. But they are aware of a powerful, unknown Withling who’s been assisting Athson and hunt him as well. Now Athson is missing in the wilds of the Troll Heaths after trying to save his father and Limbreth and his companions are looking for him. Though Corgren’s whereabouts are unknown, everyone is on edge. But there’s another facet to the prophecy: the promised arrow to be sent by Eloch. A sign has risen in the night sky foretelling the arrival of the arrow which is the doom of Magdronu. All involved are looking for the promised relic and what’s worse is the troll army standing in the way of Athson’s escape. Even if he wins free, Athson’s destiny awaits him with the coming of the white arrow and confrontation with Magdronu.

I’m still uncertain I’ve captured the essence of the book with this blurb. I offer it now for a bit of review and opinion but I’ll also rely on my editor for some solid input. This will likely change over the next few months but I’ve got something down and that helps to get the final version completed.

Thanks for reading today. Please leave your thoughts below in the comments and I’ll answer as soon as I can. Join me tomorrow for the beginning of my open-house event where I’ll offer digital autographs of my books among other activities. It runs all weekend!

BOD FinalThe Bow of Destiny is my first novel and it has a trailer viewable on YouTube. I made the trailer as a DIY project with as low a budget as possible. Here’s some background on how I did it:

1. First, I had some pictures I already used regarding my site so those made a good start. However, I did purchase some others from iStockPhoto to fill out what I needed.

2. Next I needed some background music. After doing some research I found out about the Creative Commons website. There I found some music that I liked entitled “Dark Fog” by Kevin MacLeod. Creative Commons allows you to use what’s posted for free as long as you clearly post the credits for the creator.

3. After downloading the music, I started using Microsoft Live Movie Maker and worked for several hours on the project. I added the pictures and the music and set the timing for the former based on the music. I also added the text and the various affects using Movie Maker.

It’s my first effort at a trailer and it seems to strike a cord with people. Take a look at the end result on my YouTube link. Also, you can check out the great lineup of trailers from the block party today and for previous days by clicking here!

BOD Final

Blurb:

Haunted by his past. Hunted in the present. Uncertain what is real.

Athson has seen things that aren’t there and suffered fits since being tragically orphaned as a child at the hands of trolls and Corgren the wizard. When a strange will mentioning a mysterious bow comes into his possession, he’s not sure it’s real. But the trolls that soon pursue him are all too real and dangerous. And what’s worse, these raiders serve Corgren and his master, the hidden dragon, Magdronu, who are responsible for the destruction of his childhood home. Athson is drawn into a quest for the concealed Bow of Hart by the mystic Withling, Hastra, but Athson isn’t always sure what’s real and who his enemies are. With Corgren and Magdronu involved, Athson must face not only frequent danger but his grasp on reality and the reasons behind his tragic past.

Writing Background & Book Development

If you’re just back from the scavenger hunt, I hope you didn’t get winded. I’ll slow down a moment and let you catch your breath. The Bow of Destiny started some three decades ago with the title of the upcoming second book, An Arrow Against the Wind. I had completed the manuscript in the mid-90’s and shopped it around until a small press accepted it. But the contract was dubious so I backed away and from there life intervened for several years.

Along the way, I became dissatisfied with the style of the book and attempted several re-boots but these never went far. Finally, I recommitted to writing about five years ago, held my nose, split the original manuscript and re-wrote it. After a great many lessons in writing with multiple rounds of editing, I finally finished the book this past June.

As to editing, I don’t know that I would have gotten this far without the talented editor I found, Jessica Barnes. She formerly worked with Random House and I found her insights spot-on. She’s been an incredible resource for bringing this book to publication. I’ll share about how I worked with Jessica and learned from her in a later blog post.

Regarding the cover, I went searching for artists I could commission and found a good many talented people available. However, I came across a piece of artwork entitled, Robin of Loxley, which closely fit The Bow of Destiny in theme. I looked up the artist, Christopher Rawlins, and inquired about developing similar artwork for the book. Chris indicated he could do the work and off we went. I sent him some ideas and descriptions and from those he forged the basic image found on the cover in a single try. I was stunned with how brilliantly he captured the essence of what I needed. I’ll go into further details about the cover development in another blog appearance but hat’s off to Christopher on a superb job.
