The Week of An Arrow Against the Wind Continues – Character Spotlight: Limbreth

Find out about lead character 1B of The Bow of Hart Saga. An Arrow Against the Wind is highlighted this week and the character of Limbreth plays a key role. Read more about her today…

LimbrethLimbreth is a young woman who appears in the book as a traveling companion to Hastra. At first glance, she’s just a young, brash woman with a horse and a couple of swords. She got a lot of bravado and seems to be looking to make a name for herself. But there’s more to her than meets the eye. Her horse is rather well-trained and Limbreth seems to have some cavalry skill as well as some rather good training at least as a duelist.

But just who is Limbreth? She’s not willing to reveal her identity. Is she the typical beauty so often found in fantasy books? Well, she’s not a model nor is she someone like Brienne in Game of Thrones. Limbreth certainly falls somewhere between in the looks department. Is she like an Amazon, or even Brienne? I’d call her neither. She’s skilled with swords but she’s no knight like Brienne.

I wrote Limbreth into the book many years ago as a young woman with heroic aspirations. She wears white, light-weight leather armor made for dueling and her horse is white – she seems to like the color. Last year, I happened to Joan of Arcread about Joan of Arc. I’d always heard about her and even seen a few shrines to her in some churches in France (my wife’s a French teacher so I’ve been a few times). However, I’d never really studied her closely. When I did, I found Limbreth to be eerily similar to her in appearance except for the hair style (Joan bobbed her hair). I never intended Limbreth to appear like her in any way. It just turned out that way through no intention of my own.

Along the way in the book (and what’s coming in the next two books), Limbreth’s role grows. In fact, she gets some very good scenes all through the series. But Athson is the true main character since everything revolves around him and the Bow of Hart. But Limbreth’s a character who’s grown in many ways from when I first added her to the book many years ago when I wrote the first draft. She now has far more complexity to her in addition to her larger role.

Limbreth takes on an expanded role beginning in An Arrow Against the Wind and she doesn’t look back. The quest leaves her struggling with her own faults as well as the rigors of travel. Along the way, she discovers far more about herself than she ever realized in her dreams. Read along and enjoy her journey as a quest participant and as a person. Her struggles are every bit as integral as Athson’s only in a different way.

Swimming Upstream With The Big Fish

When you are a self-published author you wear many hats. I’m editor-in-chief so I decide what gets published. I’m the author so I write the content. I’m the advertising vice president so I decide how marketing gets done. I’m the PR director so I get the word out about what’s happening.

With all that in mind, I’m going to toot my own horn a little today since I’m the only one who can. I’ve recently had some good sales for The Bow of Destiny as I continue to work on An Arrow Against the Wind. I’ve had some nice days where I’ve found my ranks on Amazon were very good – like this one on 10/29:

or these rankings on 11/21:

amazon-ranking-112116

That’s quite nice to see. But I got a little concerned about not showing up in the epic fantasy category anymore. However, this is actually because I’m higher ranked in another category at the moment – one of the two for Sword & Sorcery in the second screen shot. I did a little research and found that I was actually on the Top 100 for Epic Fantasy too, for a total of 4 lists.

But one thing that suddenly hit me was that I was hanging around with some major authors on that list – George R. R. Martin, R. A. Salvatore and Brandon Sanderson to name a several. In fact, I was outselling them in a few cases. Surprised, I took a look at the Sword and Sorcery categories and found the same thing (note that the screen shot of ranks is from earlier in the day while the screen shots from the top 100 are later in the day so things have changed a little bit).

Needless to say I was stunned to realize that my one little novel – my tiny little fish – was swimming upstream all on it’s own with the big fish. I don’t know how long these sales for The Bow of Destiny will last but it’s very encouraging while I continue to labor along with An Arrow Against the Wind. It’s all rather exciting and gives me a little hope that the release of the second book will see some sales out of the chute, maybe some solid pre-release sales too.

Here’s the Top 100 pages for Epic Fantasy as well as Sword and Sorcery for both e-books and all books:

In that last one, Sword of Storms from GOT was actually behind The Bow of Destiny. It’s good to understand where you are and with whom you are competing. However, it’s just little ole me, no publisher, no PR, no real advertising budget and certainly not a strong list of other books to support my sales in any way. It’s just one book from a first-time, unknown author, just hanging around with the big fish. That’s all for tooting my own horn. Anyone that needs to toot their own horn, please do so in the comments, I’d love to hear about your successes!

Back View of Man Running on StairsIf you haven’t read The Bow of Destiny yet, why haven’t you? It’s been on two top 100 lists on Amazon over the last few weeks, including Epic Fantasy and it’s selling like crazy – over 1500 copies (644 in October alone). It’s only $0.99 for now so grab an e-copy using one my links on the sidebar. It’s been a real whirlwind with the sales the last few months so I’m trying to catch my breath like a winded runner!

As I mentioned above, I’m pushing a deadline to get An Arrow Against the Wind out to my editor. My release schedule is still a bit murky but should clear over the course of this month. However, my hope is still to release it early in January though it may be delayed. I’ll try to get a definite date announced soon so check back.
